Women have specific health concerns. At Motion Works Physiotherapy Centre physiotherapists are trained in the evaluation and treatment of numerous medical conditions affecting women. Physiotherapy treatment methods have proven very successful for the following health conditions:
Pre and Post Natal
Many women suffer from back, and pelvic joint pain /dysfunctions either during pregnancy or soon following delivery. These symptoms may come from strained joints from the extra weight of the pregnancy or due to ligamentous laxity commonly seen in this phase of life. When ligaments become lax the body relies more heavily on the muscles to support the joints. If the muscles are de-conditioned or stretched as seen in many women during pregnancy, they do not work as efficiently. Therefore, some of the support mechanisms are lost. This coupled with the altered postures assumed during the later stages of pregnancy can predispose women to back pains.
In the early stages post partum, there is an increase in bending and lifting associated with the care of a newborn. This only adds additional strain to the low back and neck. Physiotherapists are highly trained in the assessment and treatment of joint, ligament and muscle injures and can help you recover from the stress and strain of pregnancy so you can enjoy your new baby without pain.
Studies have shown that stress incontinence following vaginal deliveries is extremely common and can continue to occur with coughing or sneezing, for several years following the delivery of your baby. This is due to injuries sustained to the core muscles including the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. Physiotherapists are trained in assessing for core strength and can assist you in "Reconnecting with your core" post partum. Education is provided regarding ways to minimize the strain on the pelvic floor while providing a proven home exercise program to rebuild the strength of your core abdominal muscles including the pelvic floor muscles.

Breast Cancer (Post-operative rehabilitation)
Physiotherapy intervention has been proven effective in the management of women recovering from breast surgeries secondary to cancer. Following surgical mastectomies, women often have difficulties with mobility and strength in the arm and upper back. This can add additional strain to the neck and low back as compensatory movements are adopted to raise the arm during reaching activities. At Motion Works Physiotherapy Centre our team of highly skilled and caring professionals will provide a complete assessment to determine the best possible treatment regime for each individual. Women suffering from lymphadema following lymph node removal may also benefit from the assistance of our massage therapist…
